GMO
Corn & Glyphosate Health Effects
GMO stands for genetically modified
organisms. This means that scientists are altering the genetic makeup of crops
by inserting a gene or two into individual cells in a lab.
Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum herbicide
that is applied to food crops to kill weeds and grasses. It has become one of
the most widely used herbicides since its introduction in 1974. It is not only
used in farming, but also in forestry and gardens. “Broad-spectrum” means that
the chemical is non- selective and will kill most plants. Roundup, made by the
company Monsanto (now Bayer), is one of the better-known glyphosate herbicides.
Exposure occurs when the spray is inhaled
or when it gets onto a person’s skin from where it may be absorbed. In the time
that this chemical has been in wide use, the incidence of autoimmune diseases
such as multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease has
increased similar to glyphosate use. Glyphosate causes autoimmune conditions
and some
studies
suggest
that there may be a link. (70)
Glyphosate interrupts the functioning of
the gut bacteria which is a common feature of all autoimmune diseases,
especially celiac disease. Celiac disease and gluten intolerance are a growing
problem worldwide and
research
suggests that glyphosate may be
the main factor. (71)
It has been shown to disrupt the gut bacteria in animals by
killing beneficial bacteria and allowing pathogens to proliferate. In fact, all
celiac disease symptoms can be explained by glyphosate’s known properties. This
is because glyphosate may interrupt the breakdown of protein in the gut —
leaving large fragments that the immune system will identify as foreign and
attack — which, in turn, would lead to the immune system launching its own
attack.
Glyphosate
also damages
the delicate walls of the
small intestine causing what is known as “leaky gut.” (71)
The
intestinal wall is covered with a protective mucus membrane that absorbs
nutrients and at the same time prevents harmful substances from accessing the
bloodstream. When the gut is leaky, it has openings in the lining of the gut
wall that allow bacteria and toxins to seep through. This causes an allergic
reaction and may trigger autoimmune reactions.
It has been established that leaky
gut
is a major step in the progression of most autoimmune
diseases
and it is present in most patients with autoimmune conditions (74).
Glyphosate,
being a strong antibiotic, also causes havoc on the gut bacteria, leaving the
gut and body susceptible to infections and autoimmune conditions.
A 2013 study
suggested that glyphosate may be contributing to the rise in autism,
Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and more. (73)
Now that you’ve read the bad news, here’s
something positive for you: changing to an organic diet as far as possible can
rapidly lower the levels of glyphosate in your body. A new
study
published
in Environmental Research showed reduced levels in just a week when subjects
switched to an organic diet (72)
There are a few reasons why GMOs are
linked to the development of autoimmune diseases
142
. We’ll discuss them here.
Firstly,
they contain more pesticides than non-GMOs. This is because GMOs are modified
for farmers to use more herbicides without killing the crops.
Commercial soybeans sold today routinely
contain quantities of the herbicide Roundup (glyphosate) that its maker,
Monsanto, once described as “extreme” (
Bøhn
et al
2014).
there are other herbicides
applied to GMOs which are easily of equal concern. The herbicide
Glufosinate
(
phosphinothricin
,
made by Bayer) kills plants because it inhibits the plant enzyme glutamine
synthetase. This ubiquitous enzyme is found also in fungi, bacteria and
animals. Consequently,
Glufosinate
is toxic to most
organisms.
Glufosinate
, is also a neurotoxin of mammals
that doesn’t easily break down in the environment and is accumulating in
environment & people. (Lantz et al. 2014)
A yet further reason to be
concerned about GMOs is that most of them contain a viral sequence called the
cauliflower mosaic virus (
CaMV
) promoter (or they
contain the similar figwort mosaic virus (FMV) promoter). Two years ago, the
GMO safety agency of the European Union (EFSA) discovered that both the
CaMV
promoter and the FMV promoter had wrongly been assumed
by them (for almost 20 years) not to encode any proteins. In fact, the two
promoters encode a large part of a small multifunctional viral protein that
misdirects all normal gene expression and that also turns off a key plant
defense against pathogens. (75).
Independent laboratory tests commissioned by the
Environmental Working Group found glyphosate, the notorious weedkiller linked
to cancer, in more than 80 percent of non-organic hummus and chickpeas...
Studies funded by consumer-oriented organizations, such as The Institute
for Responsible Technology
3
and The Environmental Working Group,
4
have found an alarming number of
connections between GMOs and health problems, including intestinal damage,
inflammation, higher rates of disease, and even death(16).
Glyphosate
use has increased 16-fold
5
since
the Roundup® ready seeds were introduced in the 1990s. This statistic should
worry all of us because the World Health Organization released a report
6
stating
that glyphosate probably causes cancer in humans. In fact, earlier this year a
California jury awarded one couple millions of dollars in damages on the
grounds that exposure to Roundup® caused9 their cancers. It was the third case
in that state alone.
7
(16)
Another problem caused by the
widespread use of glyphosate in our crops is that it has led to a sharp
increase in glyphosate-resistant weeds. These “superweeds” require even greater
herbicide use and are often combated using older, more dangerous herbicides,
such as 2, 4-D, a chemical that has been linked
8
with
non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Parkinson’s disease, endocrine disruption, and
reproductive problems.(16).
Glyphosate
neurotoxicity produces damage affecting dopamine in a way similar to that seen
in Parkinson’s (20).
(
Glyphosate-the most widely used herbicide &
widespread in U.S. food system- dramatic increases in pathologies in the F2
generation grand-offspring, and F3 transgenerational great-grand-offspring were
observed. The transgenerational pathologies observed include prostate disease,
obesity, kidney disease, ovarian disease, and birth abnormalities. Epigenetic
analysis of the F1, F2 and F3 generation sperm identified differential DNA
methylation regions (DMRs). A number of DMR associated genes were identified
and previously shown to be involved in pathologies. Therefore, we propose
glyphosate can induce the transgenerational inheritance of disease and germline
(e.g. sperm) epimutations (61));
As
we know, pesticides can cause toxicity leading to an autoimmune response and
many autoimmune conditions and cancer.
Secondly,
many GMOs have been designed to produce their own insecticide. This has
negative consequences for those who eat these foods. Evidence shows that it
is
damaging the intestines and causing
leaky gut, dysbiosis, and epigenetic effects, making individuals more
susceptible to autoimmune disorders
144
. This is because an unhealthy digestive tract
suppress
es
the
immune system.
An estimated 92% of corn and 94% of soy grown in the U.S. are genetically modified 1 ,

Many GM crops, including corn, were engineered to produce their own insecticide, called Bt -toxin, by combining the plant’s DNA with DNA from bacteria. Bt -toxin kills insects by destroying the lining of their digestive tracts. The poison is not specific to insects and also pokes holes in human cells 9 , damaging the intestines and causing leaky gut, which is a precondition for developing an autoimmune disease. The growing body of evidence 10 that GMOs are dangerous prompted the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) to publicly warn that “it is biologically plausible for Genetically Modified Foods to cause adverse health effects in humans.”
GM
plants are also engineered to enhance plants’ natural “plant protectors,”
including prolamins, agglutinins, digestive enzyme inhibitors, and saponins.
These chemicals contribute to leaky gut, gut dysbiosis, and inflammation, all
of which
negatively impact
those of us with an autoimmune disease
or inflammatory condition.
Glyphosate, the herbicide used on GM crops, is also a potent chemical that can attack the bacteria in your gut. Unfortunately, the good bacteria in your gut, the kind that help with digestion and keeping the bad bacteria in check, are more likely to be susceptible to glyphosate, while the bad bacteria, including strains that cause salmonella and botulism, are highly resistant to glyphosate 11 . This means that eating GMO foods can decrease your healthy bacteria and increase the bad bacteria, putting you at risk for Candida overgrowth , leaky gut, and inflammation, which can contribute to autoimmune disease.

Dr. Swanson took the
percentage of GMO corn and soy crops planted and
the amount of Glyphosate (active ingredient in Monsanto
Roundup) applied
to corn and soy and plotted their RAPID EXPONENTIAL rise over time, and
overlapped this data of # of GMO crops planted with the rise of chronic disease
states.
The consumption of GMO crops or
consumption of animals consuming GMO crops were correlated with incidence of or
deaths due to organ diseases, cancers, and neurological diseases.
All of the correlations were
greater than 90%, with autism and senile dementia at 99%. Intestinal diseases
were correlated with the number of acres of
Bt
corn
planted.
Again, the correlations are all
approximately 95%.
By looking at the green lines
you can see the expected increase in the different diseases (based on the rise
prior to 1996 when GMOs were rapidly introduced).

study, called the Corn Comparison Report, was recently released by Profit Pro

GMO corn: nutritionally void
The
nutrition statistics for GMO corn are bone chilling. Here is what the report indicates:
Organic
corn has 14 ppm of manganese. GMO corn has only 2 ppm.
Real corn has 7 times more manganese!
Organic
corn has 6130 ppm of calcium. GMO is stripped down to 14 ppm.
Real corn has 437 times more calcium!
Organic
corn has 113 ppm of magnesium. GMO corn is vacant, with only 2 ppm.
Real corn has 56 times more magnesium!
GMO corn contains alarming glyphosate levels
The
amount of formaldehyde and glyphosate in GMO corn is unbelievable. To break it
down, American EPA standards allow glyphosate in water of up to .7ppm.
European
tests
indicate that animals begin experiencing liver damage at .0001 ppm
of
glyphosate
in water. Putting these two statistics together,
America's water levels can contain glyphosate that is 7,000 times greater than
the amount required for animal liver damage!
GMO corn takes that statistic up yet another
notch
. GMO
corn
contains 13 ppm of glyphosate,
or the equivalent of 130,000 times more toxicity than the level found animals
begin experiencing liver damage.
The formaldehyde level of GMO corn is extremely high
In a
similar study on GMO corn, Dr. Huber found out that animals avoid GMO corn at
all costs. When given a choice between both GMO and non-GMO varieties of corn,
animals always go for the real organic corn. Huber also found out that
.97ppm
of formaldehyde is toxic to animals
.
The
GMO
corn he tried to give
the animals contained
200 times that amount!

Independent labs have found that
100% of the corn tested in Frito-Lay Sun Chips, marketed as a better snack

.
GMO Free USA

SunChips
to an independent
lab to test for GMO content and glyphosate residue. The results came back
leaving no question
GM corn (grown with
Bt
toxins,
a registered pesticide) and
glyphosate traces were throughout all
samples
.
The
glyphosate residue test was conducted by an accredited lab using the Specific
LC/MS/MS testing method with a minimum detectable level of 0.02 ppm. The test
documented the presence of
glyphosate in
SunChips
at
a level of 0.14 ppm
, or 0.14 mg/kg. As we reported in the findings of
our Froot Loops testing, this gives a significant reason for concern.
Health
Risks of GMO Corn: Glyphosate Toxicity
There
is a growing body of scientific
evidence which indicates
that glyphosate bio-accumulates in our bodies. It
has been linked to endocrine disorders, autism, cancer, and reproductive health
issues. One MIT scientist, Dr. Stephanie Seneff, says that
glyphosate is one of the worst toxins
in the environment,
yet we put it in our bodies daily
GMO Corn & Herbicide Found in
Sunchips
Healthy Foods You Had No Idea Were Filled
With
Pesticides
several studies have shown that frequent exposure to
glyphosate
doubles a
persons
risk
of developing a
blood cancer known as Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Last year, the World Health
Organization classified glyphosate as a
probable human carcinogen
.
In light of new evidence on the dangers of glyphosate, yesterday
(June 6), European Union nations
failed to pass
a short-term extension of
glyphosates
license for agricultural use. The pesticide
could be barred in the EU as soon as next month.
Proponents of GMO crops claim that they will feed the world and
reduce chemical herbicide use, but we now know these promises have
fallen flat
. Glyphosate
hasnt
replaced atrazine. Instead, GMOs have led to more
superweeds
. Monsanto, Dow Agrosciences and
other agricultural chemical manufacturers are coming up with
more toxic mixtures
of chemicals to fight hardier weeds that
have evolved to withstand weedkillers.
It is a vicious cycle that will be broken only when Congress
recognizes the importance of conservation on farms.
A
recent report
on genetically engineered crops by the
National Academy of Sciences recommends that instead of turning to new designer
chemicals to combat weeds, farmers should employ integrated weed management
techniques such as cover crops and crop rotations. These practices can reduce
the
amount
of chemical herbicides dumped on American
farmland and can also save farmers money.
But integrated weed management gets very little funding: only
1.2 percent of total conservation funding between 2006 and 2015 has gone to
promoting prudent weed management practices.
This year, a bill proposed by the House Appropriations Committee
would cut U.S. Department of Agriculture
conservation programs
that promote weed management aimed at
reducing chemical applications on farms.
EWG took a closer look at the science underpinning the World
Health Organization decision last year to classify glyphosate as a probable
carcinogen.
Here is what we found: A growing body of research is finding a
link between glyphosate exposure and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, especially with some
specific subtypes of the cancer.
One study, published in 2008 by
Swedish researchers
, found that exposure to glyphosate
tripled
the
risk of a subtype of non-Hodgkin called small lymphocytic lymphoma.
This alarming link may be masked when the data is lumped in with
other kinds of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that have different causes.
Moreover, there is often a lag time between exposure to a
carcinogen and when people find out they have cancer. The same Swedish study
found that a
persons
risk of being diagnosed with
non-Hodgkin lymphoma began to rise more than 10 years after exposure.
This is disturbing, given that the use of glyphosate in the
United States exploded 20-fold over the past two decades and most of the
herbicide has been sprayed in just the past 10 years. We may be just beginning
to see the public health consequences of this herbicide.
Studies that take a closer look at specific types of cancer show
alarming evidence of the potential for glyphosate to increase cancer risk. They
should not be ignored.
In the now-
retracted document
, EPA initially found insufficient evidence to
classify glyphosate as a probable carcinogen, citing some studies that
havent
been able to associate glyphosate exposure with
higher risks of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
The trouble is, there
are many kinds of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and by trying to link a whole group of
different cancers to glyphosate exposure, the EPA draft may have missed
associations with specific kinds of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

By Dr. Mercola
With the support of local prosecutors, Mr.
Gloeckner
, a German farmer who had 65 cows die after he fed
them genetically modified
Bt
corn has filed
criminal charges against the manufacturer, alleging that the company not only
knew the corn could be lethal to livestock, but was covering up deaths that
occurred during clinical trials.
According to a recent press release by GM Watch
1
, the lawsuit asserts that Swiss biotech
Syngenta committed a grave criminal offense by deliberately withholding the
results of a feeding trial in which four cows died in two days. The deaths
prompted the company to halt the test. No health problems or deaths were
reported in the control group, which was not fed the genetically
engineered
Bt
176 corn.
Syngenta is by law required to register the results of feeding
studies with the appropriate authorities, which they never did. They testified
before the court in an earlier lawsuit brought by Mr.
Gloeckner
,
stating they knew of no risks related to their
Bt
176
corn, which resulted in the case against them being dismissed. According to the
featured press release
2
:
"As a consequence of the deliberate withholding of that
critical information
Gloeckner
suffered
financial damage well above 500000 (US$650,000) which he was prevented from
regaining through the initial court process."
Genetically Engineered Crops Taking a Toll on
Livestock Health
As reported by Institute of Science in Society
3
, this is far from an isolated incident of
mysterious deaths associated with genetically engineered feed, and it's not
just Syngenta's
Bt
176 corn either.
Thousands of livestock deaths have been reported across India, as a result of
grazing on genetically engineered crops and feed. The Philippines have also
reported cases.
According to
Dr. Don Huber
, an expert on the toxicity of genetically engineered plants, a
new organism linked to GE crops appears to be the cause of high reproductive
failure in livestock. The organism was initially identified by veterinarians
around 1998about two years after the introduction of Roundup Ready soybeans,
which is one of the staple feeds. The vets were puzzled by sudden rates of
miscarriages. While sporadic at first, the phenomenon has continued to increase
in severity.
In an interview last year, Dr. Huber stated:
"We [recently] received a call from a county extension educator,
indicating that he has a dairy that has a 70 percent abortion rate. You put
that on top of 10 to 15 percent of infertility to start with, and you're not
going to have a dairy very long. In fact, a lot of our veterinarians are now
becoming very concerned about the prospects for being able to have replacement
animals."

GMO foods
are
to be avoided. We are getting this. Learn them - see the graphic
below. They contain both GMOs and Glyphosate.
2.
Glyphosate foods
are everyday foods, both GMO and
non-GMO that are raised with toxic
chemicals. Remember that Glyphosate or worse
pesticides and herbicides are in all non-organic foods.
3.
Certified Non-GMO foods with
Glyphosate
Yep
, a whole new generation
of non-GMO foods with Glyphosate is getting certified. The
public is demanding non-GMO, so these toxic foods are getting approved.
I see them filling grocery shelves and flying under the radar.
Marketed as healthy, they contain plenty of herbicides and
pesticides. Do not buy them. Let food manufacturers know we want CLEAN ORGANIC
FOOD.
Our best defense is to eat 100% ORGANIC.
Avoid foods that contain Glyphosate, Monsanto toxic
herbicide. This includes anything not certified organic.
A leading
FDA-registered food safety testing laboratory has found extremely high levels
of glyphosate in some of America’s most popular food products. Glyphosate,
the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup, is the most heavily used
chemical weedkiller in food and agricultural production in human
history, as a result of the widespread adoption of genetically engineered crops
now grown on more than 175 million acres in the US and over 440
million acres around the world.
New scientific
evidence shows that probable harm to human health could begin at ultra-low
levels of glyphosate, even 0.1 parts per billions (ppb). Sadly, many
popular foods tested for glyphosate measured between 289.47 ppb up
to 1,125.3 ppb!
The testing and
analysis of 29 popular foods was performed by
Anresco
Laboratories,
San Francisco, an FDA registered laboratory that has done expert food
safety testing since 1943. The laboratory found that many well-known
products showed high amounts of glyphosate. Original Cheerios, for
example, measured 1,125.3 ppb. Other high levels of glyphosate were found
in familiar products such as Oreos, Doritos, and Ritz Crackers. Glyphosate
degrades in the soil into
AMPA,
aminomethylphosphonic
acid, an
endocrine
disuptor
found in foods and
water. Here are a few of the test results:
In-Store Brands can be
unreliable.
Many groceries claim their private label products are organic. Private label is
when your grocery chain buys a product from a food manufacturer
and substitute their grocery label on it. OK, but how carefully do
they research the health claims? Trader
Joes
insists that all their private label in-store brands products are from GMO free
ingredients.
However
consumer groups are dubious of
their due diligence, since Trader
Joes
will not
reveal the name of their third party labs or ingredient sources.
Whole Foods Market
claims their 365
brand
is non-GMO.
However
a recent Cornucopia Report claims to have found more
than 50% GMO corn in their 365 brand cornflakes!
Safeway says it
follows USDA Organic standards for its O Organic brand.
However
Safeway does not reveal its ingredient sources or the certification
laboratories. Even more troubling is that Safeway is a member of the Grocery
Manufacturers
Association that spent $11 million to defeat
GMO labeling.
Thousands
of chemicals are being used on our crops.
Glyphosate, the active ingredient in
RoundUp
by
Monsanto
is hot news now, as the most prevalent
herbicide in the world. Developed by Monsanto, although their patent
has expired, the majority of glyphosate is made in China.
Glyphosate has two primary damaging effects.
1) An endocrine disruptor and toxin that accumulates in the liver and bone
marrow, lowering immune system and healthy cell replication. 2) It is
a potent anti-biotic that kills or damages gut bacteria.
Atrazine by
Syngenta
is a the second
most common herbicide in the US after Glyphosate.
Atrazine is commonly found as a runoff contaminant in rivers,
streams, and lakes, it can travel hundreds of miles on airborne dust from the
farms where
its
sprayed. Human studies of
Glyphosate and Atrazine in utero show impaired sexual development in boys,
genital deformations, including undescended testicles
and microphallus (
micropenis
).
Chlorpyrifos
was created by the Dow Chemical Company in the
1960s. It is widely used in home and garden settings and is also used
on cotton, almonds, oranges, apples and corn crops. Symptoms of low-dose
exposure can include headaches, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, nausea,
diarrhea and blurred vision. More serious conditions include respiratory paralysis,
increased risk of children born with lower IQs and potential for ADHD.
Metolachlor is
an herbicide sold by Syngenta,
and
generic versions are widely available from many other companies.
It is used on corn, soy, sorghum, lawns and trees.
Metolachlor is recognized by the EPA as carcinogenic. Other side effects
include difficulty breathing, nausea, convulsions, and jaundice.
Monsanto claims that Glyphosate targets
enzymes found in plants, not in humans. But further research reveals that
Glyphosate targets enzymes in bacteria, so our friendly gut micro-biome is
damaged.
3) A New Generation of Certified non-GMO
foods with Glyphosate!
Now that the public is
demanding non-GMO, a new generation of toxic foods has arrived
in grocery shelves and flying under the radar. Marketed as
healthy, these non-GMO products are sprayed with plenty of herbicides and
pesticides. Do not buy them. They are documented to be harmful to your health.
Let food manufacturers know we want CLEAN SAFE FOOD. The
Non-GMO Project
is busy certifying all kinds of nutritionally empty and
toxic products from big food companies. Their stamp of approval may
indicate there are no GMOs, but it is no indication of healthy food.
The Healthy
Food Movement is Reaching Critical Mass
The food industry’s rapid response to public interest in non-GMO foods
shows that they are really listening to the marketplace. If you are seriously
interested in clean food, then vote with your money. Let the industry
know we want CLEAN FOOD, and we want it NOW. We want non-GMO food
thats
raised in a sustainable manner, in harmony with the
planet, without harmful chemicals. We want no Glyphosate, Atrazine, Chlorpyrifos, Metolachlor,
or any of the thousands of other harmful chemicals that kill bees, humans, and
damage the environment.
Buy Local, Unprocessed
Foods
To avoid both GMOs and Glyphosate, look for the USDA
Organic label, when possible. Talk to your local farmers and
find out which ones are using sustainable organic practices. They may not be
certified organic, but they’ll know a lot about it, and will be able to
guide you. Fresh, local unprocessed fruits and vegetables immediately after
picking, are the most nutritious foods on the planet. We do not really
need packaged foods to live. We need unprocessed whole foods. Big
industry marketing hype is ultimately painting themselves into a
corner. Our healthy food movement is so strong that it is reaching critical
mass. We need to stay firm. Do not buy the hype, and vote with your
wallet for
CLEAN UNPROCESSED
FOOD.
Eating GMO-free is good, but it does not rule
out toxic pesticides
or herbicides used on non-GMO crops. To protect
yourself from all farming chemicals, choose 100% Organic.

Abstract
Prostate cancer is a common but complex disease,
and distinguishing modifiable risk factors such as diet for more aggressive disease
is extremely important. Previous work has detected intriguing associations
between vegetable, fruit, and grains and more aggressive prostate cancer,
although these remain somewhat unclear. Here we further investigate such
potential relationships with a case-control study of 982 men (470 more
aggressive prostate cancer cases and 512 control subjects). Comparing the
highest to lowest quartiles of intake, we found
that increasing intakes
of leafy vegetables were inversely associated with risk of aggressive prostate
cancer [
adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.46, 0.96; P trend =
0.02],
as was higher consumption of high carotenoid vegetables
(OR
= 0.71, 95% CI: 0.48, 1.04; P trend = 0.04). Conversely,
increased
consumption of high glycemic index foods
were
positively associated with risk of aggressive disease (
OR = 1.64, 95% CI:
1.05, 2.57; P trend = 0.02). These results were driven by a number of specific
foods within the food groups. Our findings support the hypothesis that
diets
high in vegetables and low in high glycemic index foods decrease risk of
aggressive prostate cancer.
Syngenta has been accused of attempting to block the publication
of UC Berkeley Professor Tyrone Hayes's work on Atrazine. Dr. Hayes, PhD.
claims he resigned his contractor position with Syngenta after they refused to
allow him to publish the results of studies they had funded. The research in
question found that Atrazine causes hermaphroditism in frogs. After resigning,
he obtained independent funding to repeat the research, which was subsequently
published.
Since then, he's built an educational web site dedicated to
informing the public about Atrazine
8
. Dr. Hayes gives the following summary of the
herbicide:
"Atrazine is the most common chemical contaminant of ground
and surface water in the United States. It is a potent endocrine disruptor with
ill effects in wildlife, laboratory animals and humans. Atrazine chemically
castrates and feminizes wildlife and reduces immune function in both wildlife
and laboratory rodents. Atrazine induces breast and prostate cancer, retards
mammary development, and induces abortion in laboratory rodents. Studies in
human populations and cell and tissue studies suggest that Atrazine poses
similar threats to humans. The peer-reviewed scientific studies to support these
statements are summarized and can be viewed as you navigate this website."
... Despite the environmental and public health risks, Atrazine
continues to be used in the US, for economic reasons. Atrazine may only
increase corn yield by as little as 1.2 %, and not at all according to some
studies. The
agri
-giant Syngenta, however, has a
very powerful lobby and spent $250,000 lobbying in Minnesota alone in 2005 to
keep Atrazine on the market there."
